Silver Bullet (1985)
Directed by Danel Attias
I’ve done a few Stephen King movies in the past but this one I think I’ve only seen twice? Idk. I decided to watch it because I like Corey Haim. Hell License to Drive is one of my all time favorite movies. The Lost Boys was another classic I enjoyed and reviewed in the past so why not?
Silver Bullet is about a small town being ravaged by a werewolf. A young paraplegic boy is the first to fully see the monster and survive. Of course no one believes him, especially when he finds out the local priest is the werewolf. Now he takes it upon himself to bring the wolf to justice. While the story isn’t anything special, it is handled well. Most werewolf movies are the same, to be honest. Corey Haim is always great, especially in his younger years. Lucas was/is an underrated classic in 80s teen cinema.
The effects in this are decent. The werewolf looks alright, this isn’t The Howling or American Werewolf levels but I’ve seen worse. Haim does a great job of appearing crippled, which is impressive from an able bodied young person. Gary Busey is solid as the uncle. This was before he went full on crazy haha. The only part that I didn’t enjoy is the narration, the sister is bland and her voice over is even worse. It really seems out of place with the rest of the movie, and I honestly forgot it existed.
Silver Bullet isn’t the best werewolf movie, but I’d say its above average. There was a slew of solid werewolf outings in the 80s. While this isn’t as good as American Werewolf in London, I do find it better than The Howling. Silver Bullet gets a B from me, maybe Corey Haim boosts that for me? I don’t know.
