Oct. 19th: The Mummies of Guanajuato (1972)

The Mummies of Guanajuato (1972)

Directed by Federico Curiel

LUCHA! LUCHA!  Luche Libre is awesome.  Mummies are awesome.  Horror movies are awesome!  Let’s mix that shit together shall we?

The story is rather basic.  A bunch of ancient zombies come to life and attack the people of a small town.  Now Santo, Blue Demon, Mil Mascaras and other luchadores must team together and destroy the mummies.  Yeah some of it is slow, and hard to follow, if you aren’t staring at it and reading the subtitles closely.  Other parts?  Awesome!  Who doesn’t want to see masked wrestlers fighting mummies and shooting them with flamethrowers?  If you don’t, then I don’t want to be your friend.

The special effects and mummy makeup is pretty decent.  For the time it was good.  They look genuinely creepy, I’ll say that.  They’re really more like zombies than mummies.  They aren’t covered in wrappings, more shriveled and decaying, which was cool.  Luchadores always look cool.  The masks, the shiny and bright outfits, and bravado is always fun.

Is this a masterpiece?  Nah.  Is it good?  It was fun I’ll say that, I was greatly entertained.  I laughed quite a few times and I love Mexican wrestling so I really enjoyed this.  Mexican horror is quite interesting, I’ll say that.  If you’re into corny horror or lucha Libre then check it out!  I give this a B-.
