Slumber Party Massacre (2021)
Directed by Danishka Esterhazy

I think now they may have remade or rebooted any slasher from the 80s worth a shit. There are a few like The Burning and The Prowler, that I hope NEVER get the treatment. I kind of love the fact that they’ve avoided this. Slumber Party Massacre is one of those movies in the slasher genre that I thought was ok, but didn’t really warrant a remake. While it is fine in its own right, I never thought it was anything special, so is the remake better?
Slumber Party Massacre takes the story of the driller killer from the original and puts a twist on it. Instead of a group of girls being oblivious to the whole thing, we get a group of true crime fans pretending to play the roles of slasher cliche types in order to kill the driller killer once and for all. While I enjoyed the new and upated twist, some of the stuff falls apart at the end. I won’t give much away because it literally just came out.
The acting is decent for a what it is. The girls are all fairly solid, playing the tropes and then breaking free from those. Of course all of them are attractive, thats what a slasher movie gives you haha. The driller killer kind of just looks like an idiot and I can’t stand his stupid face he makes the whole time. There are a group of dude bros that are annoying, but they’re kind of suppose to be. The special effects are pretty good, we get a lot of gore, which is impressive. The kill where the guy gets the drill through the face and out the back of his head whilst he’s standing was crazy.
Was this remake good? I still don’t really know. It also isn’t really a remake, more of a sequel, I guess. It is much heavier on humor than the original was. The original had comedic moments but for the most part it was handled subtly. This one is in your face a lot of the time. I’m having a tough time grading it, because it is decent but nothing too great. I guess for that I give it a C. I found myself saying “Wtf is happening” especially towards the end when things start to fall apart a bit.
