Him (2025)
Directed by Justin Tipping
I have a handful of passions, horror movies, 80s metal, dead video formats, and football. I haven’t really talked much about my love for football on here, but why would I. There are no football horror movies right? Well….
Him is about a rookie QB coming into the draft, gets invited to train with the GOAT QB of the…pro league. Once he arrives, things get increasingly weirder and he begins to question not only his idol, but himself. I have a really hard time trying to explain this movie. Why? It is probably the weirdest fuckin movie that I’ve ever seen in the theater. Towards the end things get so strange with cults and supernatural powers that I was kind of dumbfounded. I will say that it is fairly original, I can’t name another movie like it.
The acting is really good at least. Marlon Wayans was awesome, I never thought he could pull of a serious role this well but he nails it. Wayans is very menacing and charismatic at the same time. I’ve always enjoyed his comedy, from The Wayans Bros to Scary Movie. I used to think that he was basically a 1 dimensional character guy, goofy and crazy. Tyriq Withers plays Cam, the main character and he’s pretty good as well. Likable and believable as a football player.
The effects are pretty solid, it is a fair amount of CGI but it isn’t distracting. Really this movie is more cerebral than it is gory. A movie like this doesn’t really lend itself to crazy special effects. The camera work and visual effects are pretty interesting though. With a wide variety of fun camera angles, POV shots in games, and fever dream esque moments.
I think the highlight of this movie for me, was when my buddy leaned over during a very strange moment in the film and said: “You think this is what Jared Goff and Kyle Allen are doing right now?” I responded “I think more like Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers.” Hopefully some of you get that HAHA.
Him is an interesting movie. I saw it in the theater with my buddy, and a couple. Once the movie was done, the guy said to us in the bathroom “well that was the worst fucking movie I’ve ever seen.” While I don’t agree with his assessment, I do think it was a little more odd than it needed to be. It was entertaining for sure, just bizarre. I give this a C+, the acting was great but the story was too weird.
