Evil kid movies are a dime a dozen. I’ve covered a few evil kid movies in the past.  For every Omen there’s at least 15 Paperboys.  Mikey is one of those….how should I say it?  Other movies.

Mikey is about a boy, that kills his foster family?  Adoptive family?  Idk.  He goes and lives with a new family now and starts killing people.  If it sounds tired, if it sounds cliche, and if it sounds simple, its because it is man.  Nothing new here.  It is even similar to The Stepfather, a great movie by all means.  Brian Bonsall plays the titular Mikey.  You probably know him from Family Ties or Blank Check.  The cutsie kid with the funny looking haircut and teeth(pictured below).  He’s rather wooden and a prime example of 90s child acting.

Mikey takes a liking to the neighbor girl, whom of course is way older than him. He basically just wipes out any obstacles in his way to getting what he wants. Kills the boyfriend and such. Again this movie is anything but original, so basically nothing right? The effects are meh too, nothing worth mentioning. A guy gets bludgeoned with a baseball bat by Mikey and it is as laughable as you would imagine. There are lots of water based electrocutions, like why so many? Mimi Craven (wife of Wes Craven, pictured right) plays the mother. Of course she wont believe that Mikey is an evil asshole, we’ve seen it all before.

The acting is made for tv levels of quality. No one shines. Brian Bonsall, like previously mentioned is a child actor. Mimi Craven is passable at best and at times so void of emotion that it is funny. Josie Bissette plays Jessie the neighbor and she’s ok, and probably the best in the movie. Ashley Laurence of Hellraiser fame plays Mikey’s teacher and she is also decent. We also get another Elm Street connection with Whit Hertford (Alice’s unborn son in Elm Street 5) as the neighbor boy, creepy eyes and all!

The end is completely ridiculous. Mikey shows his true colors and attacks his mom. She is such a wuss that she can’t fight off a 7 year old boy. They end up fighting around, she gets whacked with a hammer a few times, then they crash off the balcony. Then Ferris Bueller’s dad and Kirsty from Hellraiser show up to find the mom dead and Mikey laying on top of her. Mr. Bueller makes the mistake of leaving his gun alone and Mikey empties the bullets. He meets his end by an arrow to the gut. Kirsty walks in and faces off with the little shit. Dear lord who is the “final girl” in this? You think the mom is, but she dies, now Kirst comes in and gets a slingshot ball to the face and collapses. Jessie is the only logical choice right? Mikey then turns the stove burners on, letting gas out. He goes to Jessie’s house, uninvited trying to score, I can only assume. She quickly boots him. Dad comes home and doesn’t notice the bodies around and the blood on everything, he’s an idiot. Then the dad comes into the dining room where MIkey has everyone set at the table like the end of Happy Birthday to Me, which he throws a molotov cocktail into the house and blows it up. We get a funny miniature shot of the house exploding that was classic. Now Mikey is getting with a new family, and a new name of Josh. Ugh!

I suppose you could categorize this under the “yuppie nightmare” subgenre of horror/thrillers, along with evil little shit movies. There isn’t much suspense in this and not much for rewatchability. If you really like evil kid movies, then maybe you’ll enjoy this. I found it rather lame and dull. I give Mikey a D.
