Hunter’s Blood (1986)
Directed by Robert Hughes

Backwoods horror is always effective, because being out in the woods, lost and chased by something is always scary!  Probably the two best examples are Friday the 13th and Deliverence.  Ah Deliverence, probably one of the most well known hillbilly thrillers.  Wouldn’t it be obvious and funny if someone ripped that off?  That couldn’t happen right?  Oh shit…

Hunter’s Blood is about a group of guys from the city that travel to the country to relax and hunt. Stop me if you heard this before! Anyway, the guys rub the local good ol boys the wrong way, and soon they find themselves prey to the redneck backwoods boys. Has this been done before? Yes, many times actually. Does this bring anything new to the table? Not hardly!

The acting is decent enough, there are a fair amount of recognizable faces in this including Clu Gulager, from many things but most memorable to me at least is A Nightmare on Elm Street 2. Forever a “That guy” Mickey Jones plays one of the hillbillies. If you don’t know the name, google him, I guarantee you have seen at least 5 things he was in! All around the cast is pretty decent, better than this movie deserves actually. How did I stumble across this? The VHS cover is gnarly! I saw someone post it on a VHS collectors page on facebook and was greatly intrigued.

Hey it’s that guy Mickey Jones (right)

The kills are few but effective enough. Really what this movie relies on is suspense. It does have some but the whole time I just kept thinking about how this movie totally ripped off Deliverence. This is truly a bizarre case of ripped off movie with good acting, I really can’t think of another movie that stands out like this. There are some scenes where you wonder how they will escape, so that is something.

If you like Deliverence or backwoods horror, then check this out. If you’re looking for something new or something as bad ass as the VHS cover, then you’ll probably be disappointed. I give Hunter’s Blood a solid C. Not great by any means but the acting is pretty good.
