Oct. 10th: The Fog (1980)

The Fog (1980)

Directed by John Carpenter

I’m not quite sure why it took me this long to see this movie for the first time.  I love Carpenter.  I love Jamie lee Curtis.  Hell I love Tom Atkins and Adrienne Barbeau and her awesome rack.  Somehow this one slipped through my fingers a few times.  So I gave it a watch.

The movie is about this small town that has a fog roll in.  Sounds boring right?  Well the fog carries with it evil beings that slaughter people.  All this happens exactly 100 years after a ship sinks near the town.  The story is rather simple but that’s the beauty of it.  Some of the simplest plots make the best horror, ie Halloween.

The acting is great all around.  Tom Atkins is always great as the every man.  Jamie lee Curtis is fresh off Halloween and Terror Train, she does a solid job in this as well.  Adrienne Barbeau is someone I’ve always appreciated, she had such an exotic look with her very angular face and rocking body.  She does a very good job in this as well.  Honestly everyone is on point.  It is crazy how much is brought from Halloween into this production.  Carpenter directs, Dean Cundi shoots it, Jamie lee Curtis, Charles Cyphers, Nancy Keyes all star in this.  I’m sure there’s way more but these are the ones I noticed myself.

The kills are pretty decent.  Nothing too outlandish.  The suspense and pacing is pretty solid as well.  The killers or beings or ghosts or whatever are really cool looking and creepy.  Shabby clothing and glowing eyes are haunting in this.  The atmosphere created is probably the best part honestly.  The fog rolling in is ominous for sure.

I had a good time watching this.  Is this as good as Halloween?  Not nearly but it is a solid movie, especially in the horror genre.  If you like horror then you’ll enjoy this, I wouldn’t say it is essential viewing but it is worth your time.  I give the Fog a solid B.
