Oct. 9th: Deep Blue Sea (1999)

Deep Blue Sea (1999)

Directed by Renny Harlin

THEY ATE ME, A FUCKIN SHARK ATE ME!  DRINK BITCH!!!  Ok now that I got that out of my system.  Shark movies are a dime a dozen, shit I’ve reviewed twice this year.  Seldom are they worth a broke dick, then there’s movies that are straight entertaining.  That’s where this movie falls in.

Deep Blue Sea is about a group of scientists using Mako sharks to try and find a cure for Alzheimers disease.  The sharks are genetically enhanced, smart move, what could go wrong?  Well shit hits the fan when they show the ability to thing, strategize and do other things normal sharks can’t.  People start dying, sharks start eating iconic actors and now its up to the remaining cast to destroy the brainiac sharks.

While the special effects are a little dated by today’s standards, they’re decent.  The sharks move in a believable way, and the CGI isn’t too distracting.  They’re convincing, which I guess is all you can ask for.  The kills are fun, I mean you can’t have much variety with sharks, they bite people and rip them up, boom done.  The famous Samuel L Jackson scene is still as fun as ever.  The first time I saw this movie, that scene surprised the hell out of me and shit if it didn’t have balls.  Kill off the biggest name in the movie in the first half hour, balls!

The acting is pretty solid.  Jackson always brings it and he’s entertaining as hell.  LL Cool J actually shows some decent chops, and improvement from Halloween H20.  He’s just a likable guy, hard to hate Cool J.  Thomas Jane becomes the main character and he’s overall pretty good.  Saffron Burrows plays Dr McAlester, she’s alright I suppose.  Her character is a little wooden and not really fleshed out, other than being hot.

If you haven’t seen this movie, I’m a little surprised.  For a shark movie it is in the top tier.  No shark movie will ever reach Jaws, it’s not going to happen, but this one is great.  Turn off your brain, grab some popcorn and enjoy this for the absurdity that it is.  I give Deep Blue Sea a solid B.
