His House (2020)
Directed by Remi Weekes
I mentioned last year how I have a Top 100 Horror Movies scratch off poster in my office. Well, I’m still chugging away on it and His House was listed, haven’t seen it so I queued it up. So what is this movie?
His House is about two Sudanese refugees and their daughter moving to France. Once they make it there, they are sent to Britain and given asylum. Their daughter didn’t make it, and they deal with the grief and fear of that. Soon weird things start happening and demonic like creatures show up in the walls. Are these real? Are they part of some weird paranormal power? That is the question. Well they soon find out its a curse from a “night witch” that is haunting them.
The acting is really good. Both the husband and wife are really solid. The amount of emotion shown by both actors is wild. The movie has some creepy moments with the demonic presence and creatures coming out of the wall. The film is paced pretty well too, it doesn’t really lag too much but takes time to build the characters and lore. Along with the horror elements we also get some dramatic elements and it touches on the topics of xenophobia and racism.
His House is pretty good. It did deserve to be on the poster and I’m happy I gave it a watch. I’m not sure how many times I’ll rewatch this but a solid film all around. I give this an A-.
