I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025)
Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson
Legacy sequels. Why are there so many legacy sequels? Thanks a lot Halloween 2018! Anyway, ya’ll know my love for the original I Know What You Did Last Summer (IKWYDLS) it basically kindled my love of horror after being introduced to Child’s Play way too young. When I heard they were making a new one, I laughed, then I heard Jennifer Love Hewitt was coming back and then I knew I had to watch it.
This is pretty similar to the original. New group of college students come home for 4th of July and accidentally kill someone. Then someone knows. Not much new really. The new group is rather meh for the most part. One girl is Ray’s (Freddie Prinze Jr) niece or something, so there’s that. Once the “I KNOW” notes and signs and what have you, start showing up they seek out Julie. This is the part where I stop and talk about Jennifer Love Hewitt, one of my first celeb crushes. The picture of her on the red carpet went viral, with idiots hating on her. Bro. She was in her early 20s, late teens back in the day, she’s a 46 year old mother. Obviously her figure has changed, but she’s still beautiful. Anyway, she puts in a good and brief performance that was welcoming. Freddie Prinze Jr returns as well, and he puts in a great performance. So right now I say spoilers! Ray comes in to protect the kids, but twist….RAY IS THE KILLER NOW?! I actually didn’t see it coming, I was kind of surprised by it.
The cast was ok. No one wanted to see the new kids. We all wanted the original cast. Even Sarah Michelle Gellar came back! In a dream sequence, since her character died in the original. She still looks like a million bucks as well. Ryan Phillippe is the only one that didn’t return, which is fine by me because his character was a piece of shit anyway. I was genuinely surprised by Freddie Prinze Jr.’s performance. I never thought he was the strongest actor, but he’s cooking in this. Also, in all fairness he’s also aged rather well. I think its funny, with all the actors that we find out are shit humans, the cast from this all seems to be drama free and genuine.
The kills weren’t anything amazing. The kills in the original arent either so that is fine. Just your typical hook kills and stabbings. Really nostalgia was the driving force for this film, and on that level it does deliver. It wasn’t anything amazing but I enjoyed the watch and I was surprised by the ending.
If you are a fan of the original film, then you might like this. It does a fair amount of fan service but adds some twists that were interesting. The new cast is kind of meh but the old cast is there to add some flavor. I ended up giving this a C+. I was expecting a shitty legacy sequel and I got a passable nod to the first one.
