Clown in a Cornfield (2025)

Directed by Eli Craig

Killer clowns, yeah its a big subgenre and one that I’m not crazy about, but this movie was getting lots of talk this year so I had to watch it.  Shudder has done a pretty good job all in all with their original movies so I was open minded.

Clown in a Cornfield is about a small town in the midwest, where a clown mascot to a former local business emerges as a murderer.  Now a group of friends has to fight to survive and to stop Friendo the Clown!  The plot isn’t anything original or groundbreaking, but it doesn’t have to be.  All I wanted from this movie was a fun slasher, with some interesting twists and good kills.  Did I get that?  Yeah I think so.  There was also a bit of comedy thrown in for a few laughs.  The acting is pretty decent, Quinn the main character is played by Katie Douglas and she does a pretty solid job.

The kills aren’t anything elaborate but they’re done well.  We get a wide array of stabbings, shotgun blasts and even a cattle prod electrocution which was fun.  The killer is actually a group of people, comprised of the sheriff and other adults around town.  That twist was done well, and Will Sasso showed he can do more than great impressions and fat guy comedy.

Apparently Clown in a Cornfield is based on a book, which I had no idea existed, until just right now as I’m writing this.  There is also a sequel, so I’m assuming this movie will get one as well.  Is it worth all the hype it is give, I suppose, but I didn’t get blown away by it.  This was an entertaining watch that is worth your time, but don’t expect a masterpiece.  I give this a B-.
