In a Violent Nature (2024)
Directed by Chris Nash
I love slasher movies, yall know that. I am, however a firm believer that the best slashers are all from the 80s. There are a few outliers that happened in the 90s and a few that have come since. I heard lots of positive reviews of this movie, so I had to give it a watch and see what the talk was about.
In a Violent Nature is about a rotting corpse named Johnny (not Jason!) whom is on the search for a gold locket that was stolen from his grave. Now he stalks down people and kills them. It isn’t anything new here, but is it effective? I’m going to say no. My lord this movie should be renamed “In a Boring Nature”. I have never seen a slasher movie with no film score. The killer does not speak, nothing new there but without ambient music all we get to hear is crinkling leaves and birds. Hooray! Try to stay awake for that after you have worked all day! Many of the kills are off screen, a common trope of a slasher movie with a small budget, looking at you Scream (the 80s one not the Craven one), the ones that are on screen are brutal at least.

The acting is meh, no one stands out and they don’t even build any characters outside of Johnny. I almost wish Tommy Wiseau was Johnny, reprising his character from the Room, because at least that would be interesting. The look of the killer is pretty decent, but it is wasted on this movie. I just don’t get the point of not having music, and I can’t get over it! Was it meant to give this movie a more realistic feeling? Not sure, but it definitely wasn’t working for me. The fact that this movie is getting a sequel, kind of blows my mind.
In conclusion, maybe you’ll like this more than me? Idk, many people are applauding it and people that I respect in the slasher fandom realm. It just didn’t hit home for me and I nodded off a few times during it. I can’t give this anything higher than a D. The killer bumps up the score slightly. If you have shudder, you can check it out.
