Maxxxine (2024)

This is a relatively newer movie, having come out this year, it popped up on plex so I decided to check it out. I know it is related to X, which I tried to watch once before, but I was confused at what was going on, I need to revisit that.
Maxxxine is about a movie star named Maxine Minx, trying to transition from porn to legit Hollywood films. Mia Goth plays Maxine, and she’s a likable character, with a southern accent, that is a little rough around the edges. She lands a role in the movie The Puritain and is excited to become a movie star. All the while she’s followed by a dangerous man that wants her to atone for things that she has done. On top of that, there is a serial killer going around, stalking Hollywood starlets.
The acting is really good. Mia Goth is great as Maxine, she brings charisma and sexiness to the role. You know the character has a sinister side but you can’t help but root for her. The scenery of the movie is also pretty good, it is nice seeing grimey 80s Los Angeles as a backdrop. There is a video rental place that her friend works at, that just gives you that nostalgic feel. Man I miss Mom and Pop video places. Blockbuster sucked, don’t act like it didn’t!
The gore is also quite good. This isn’t a huge blood bath, so don’t go in expecting that but the kills that are here, are great. She gets chased by a guy that wants to rape her in an alley and she pulls out a gun, and makes him suck on it. Then she has him strip down naked and lay on his stomach, Maxine then stomps on his balls and crushes them. Man that made me squirm lol. The other one that got me was the last one. Maxine blows a dude’s head to bits with a shotgun, the gore is crazy.
If you have the time, check this out. It is like 2 hours long, so a little longer for horror but the acting and pacing is quite good. I really enjoyed this and now I have to rewatch X, and also check out Pearl. I give this a B+
