Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Directed by James Whale
Each year I try to throw in some all time classic movies that I haven’t seen before, just to boost my horror cred. Thankfully Peacock has nearly all the old universal monster movies so I was able to stream this bad boy. This is widely considered one of the greatest sequels of all time.
Bride of Frankenstein is continuation of the Frankenstein story with the doctor and monster both surviving the finale of the first movie. The monster stumbles along, coming to a blind man’s place where he is treated and healed. The villagers find the monster and chase him, where he comes back to the doctor and the evil doctor Pretorious, whom is making another monster, a bride. The bride instantly rejects the monster, causing him to attack in a rage and kill Pretorious and seemingly himself.

The pacing of this movie is really good. That’s the thing with these old Universal Monster flicks, they’re slow but short, so it makes up for it. The sets are awesome once again and the black and white tones of the film just play great. The acting is pretty solid aside from the cackling woman that is annoying as shit. Karloff puts in another master class as the monster. He’s able to speak this time around, when learning from the blind man. Doctor Pretorious is a jerk and you love to hate him.
This movie was really good, I still prefer the original but this one definitely has a lot to offer. It is kind of weird that the bride doesn’t come to life until the last 15 minutes of the movie, and she really doesn’t do much. If you haven’t seen this, you should, it is an all time classic. This gets an A from me.
