My Top 10 Favorite Zombie Movies
Zombie movies might be the most popular subgenre of horror, especially in the last 10 years. Buttloads of zombie features come out every year, some good, some horrible. Hell, the #1 show on TV is the Walking Dead! While I am not a fan of the Walking Dead (sorry) I do enjoy a well made zombie flick. Here is my Top Ten.
10. The Video Dead (1987)
Ok I know this movie is just awful, but the zombies are really cool looking. The concept is kind of dumb: a tv that tunes itself to an old black and white zombie movie allows the zombies to climb out of the tv and into the real world.
9. Day of the Dead (1988)
The third in the trilogy of Romero zombie films. Day of the Dead is a pretty solid zombie flick with good special effects and strong characters. While its not as good as Dawn of the Dead it is still a really good movie.
8. Night of the Comet (1984)
Maybe not a zombie movie in the traditional sense, but still counts in my opinion. A comet shoots past earth causing people to vaporize or turn into zombies. Shlocky fun and cheesy dialogue, just sit back and enjoy it.
7. Shaun of the Dead (2004)
This movie has a big following and for good reason, it is a fun zombie comedy. Horror comedies usually aren’t my thing, but I really enjoyed this movie, its just plan fun. The zombies are pretty decent and the story is quite good.
6. 28 Days(Weeks) Later (2002 & 2007)
Many people say these aren’t zombie movies but the idea is basically the same. A group of the population becomes contaminated with the “rage virus” causing them to freak out and kill the others. I couldn’t choose between the two, they’re both great.
5. Night of the Creeps (1986)
I have talked about this movie so many times. It is one of the best horror comedies ever and deserves way more recognition than it gets. Intergalactic space slugs crash to earth and feed on people’s brains turning them into zombies.
4. Return of the Living Dead (1985)
The first zombie movie where they solely feed on brains. Over the top 80s excess, crazy special effects and hopeless plot. Return has it all, its a great movie and deserves a lot of recognition in the genre.
3. Zombi 2 (1979)
A classic gore fest from Italy. Zombi 2 is intense, hardcore and takes no prisoners. The zombies look pretty cool, covered in dirt and worms. The eye gouge scene won me over, its completely nuts and fun, which is what zombie movies are suppose to be.
2. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Regarded by many as the greatest zombie film ever. The first sequel to Night of the Living Dead was a raw and guttural movie taking place in a shopping mall. The special effects were awesome, thanks to Tom Savini. A must see for zombie fans.
1. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
The granddaddy of them all. Romero’s original Night of the Living Dead was revolutionary and made a lasting impact on the horror genre. If it wasn’t for this film the zombie subgenre wouldn’t be as popular as it is.
