Saw 3D: The Final Chapter (2010) Directed by Kevin Greutert
The Saw series, what is there to say? Mostly everyone has seen a Saw movie. Did you see Saw? Of course I seesaw, Mose and I seesaw all the time. Dwight Schrute quote right there, sorry. The Saw movies pretty much carried horror in the 2000s and made the “torture porn” genre a craze for a few years. While The Final Chapter was the 7th installment in the series, it was really the first one that was truly groundbreaking. The Original Saw brought a cerebral edge to the horror genre. The following sequels seemed to diminish in quality as they went on, some argue they should’ve stopped at 3, but people came out in groups to watch these movies. The fact that it spawned 7 movies is a testament to the popularity of these films. How did the Final Chapter fair? Lets see….
This sequel, like all the others shows a recap of the ending of Saw 6. The plot is centered around a survivor of Jigsaw that wrote a book about his experience and how he felt born again after escaping. He finds himself into a series of traps based around the Three Wise Monkeys. He must solve the traps to help his wife survive. She has a chain around her neck that is slowly pulling her towards a trap door in the floor. Of course the gore is insanely graphic, which is a common factor in the saw movies. The story isn’t really anything special, it is your typical Saw story, guy gets captured, has to escape tests to survive. It amazes me how many movies they could make off from this simple idea.
Like in the other Saw movies it has that Rob Zombie green tint to it. If Rob Zombie ever did a Saw movie, it would be so green the Incredible Hulk would appear to fight friggin Gumby! The special effects are the norm for Saw, super gory, somewhat unbelievable but the gore hounds eat it up. The traps are pretty decent, I won’t go into what they are, that’s part of the fun with the Saw films. One thing I noticed was that the camera work seems a little bit cheap compared to the others. The first scene in the city during the day is so odd and doesn’t feel like the quality you normally see in Saw. The acting is rather dull, generally the acting in this series isn’t anything to write home about but this time its just kind of boring. Maybe it was just played out and the actors didn’t have the drive to give full effort? Who knows?
As a whole, the movie isn’t great. The first Saw I would give an A, this one, is a C. I’ve noticed a trend this year, a lot of C’s thrown out for ratings. Am I jaded? Maybe, but I just haven’t been blown away or enraged yet. Maybe its time to seek out something terrible or something great. Saw 3D is on hulu in wonderful 2D as Saw: The Final Chapter. It was a slightly dull installment to finish the series. Maybe that is why it ISN’T the final Saw! Yes indeed! There is a Saw 8 coming out this month, why? Because why not I suppose, hell there was 10 true Friday the 13th sequels, Freddy vs Jason and a remake/reboot so why can’t there be 8 Saw movies? Will I watch it? Shit, I might as well I have seen the other 7, but I’ll wait for it to come to Netflix or something.
