Remakes are common place these days it seems, especially in the horror genre. Every year we get barraged with remakes. Now its like the movies getting remade weren’t that great to begin with like April Fools Day. If the original film wasn’t great, then why remake it? I suppose you could probably do it and try to make the new one better than the original, but then why call it a remake? Why not just make it a stand alone film? So many questions on this, but the main one may be, are they any good? Usually not, only a select few are good or even watchable. This list is a collection of what I think the worst horror remakes are.
10. Carrie (2013)
This is one of the pointless ones to me. I mean they made a remake in 2002, then the awful sequel to that. Its not necessarily horrible but just pointless really. I watched it, it was meh but kept thinking why does this exist?
9. The Omen (2009)
When this came out a lot of people my age thought it was something new. That tends to happen when the original movie was released 30+ years prior. It was basically a shot for shot remake of the original. Julia Stiles has always been boring to me, I don’t really find her attractive or talented whatsoever.
8. Halloween (2007)
Originally I enjoyed the remake, but upon further viewing I liked it less and less. If you read my review on this, this year you know my feelings on it now. Go ahead and check that review out.
7. Fright Night (2011)
The original Fright Night is a fun little horror comedy about vampires. Its really enjoyable and acted quite well. The remake just fell flat, Colin Ferrell is just kind of a tool in everything. This one got a sequel, that I never watched and probably will never watch.
6. The Stepfather (2009)
The original Stepfather was good, I really enjoy that movie. I would go as far to say that its one of my top 25 favorite horror movies, and its very underrated. All the charm and feel of the original is lost here. I attempted to order the original off Amazon one time and they sent me the remake, making me dislike this movie even more.
5. The Hills Have Eyes 2 (2007)
Another one I saw in the theater. I remember walking out and saying “I’ve seen better acting in porno!” The remake of the first one was great, I’d say its better than the original. The sequel to it however was bad, bad acting, bad story, lots of eye rolling moments.
4. Prom Night (2008)
This to me becomes one of those why, movies. I’m going to go on record saying that I find the original Prom Night boring. In fact I don’t think its really even that good, to be honest. It has a big cult following so making a remake I suppose had a purpose, but its dull, lifeless and the acting is just bad. I love Brittany Snow, I think she’s cute, funny, and likeable but even her performance just falls flat.
3. Black Xmas (2006)
The original Black Christmas is an unnerving film and a great entry into the slasher genre, a movie that many consider one of the original slasher films with the usual format. The remake however is just hokey as hell. I saw it in theaters before I even saw the original film. Even without watching the original first I didn’t enjoy this, it was really cliché and dull. They went too over the top with the explanation why Billy became a psychotic murderer. The cast is just a collection of beautiful faces, most of which cannot act.
2. Godzilla (1998)
Ok I know what you are thinking. Godzilla isn’t a horror movie! Well back in the 1950s Scifi and horror crossed paths so many times that you can consider the original a horror film. A giant monster destroying a city is horrific to say the least. The 1998 American remake is just awful. First off the monster looks like a cross between an iguana and Beavis. The monster is Asexual, thus meaning it can somehow fertilize itself and lay the eggs….in Madison Square Garden. I will forever refer to this as Ferris Bueller vs Godzilla. Damn you Matthew Broderick and your horse faced wife!
1. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
I cannot even begin to explain how bad and disappointing this movie is/was. The original is a classic and my all time favorite horror film. The remake is more or less a shot for shot remake of the original. The one thing that made me angrier than anything else in the film is that they made Freddy a pedophile. Krueger in the original was just a child murderer, he was not a child rapist. I could go on about this movie forever so I HAVE to stop now.
