Child’s Play 2 (1990) Directed by: John Lafia

I know, I know, another murderous doll movie in my marathon! Hey, whatever I love Chucky, I mean who doesn’t? When you are married, and you and your wife work all day, the only time you get to see each other is after 6 during the week. This means that odds are your wife will be watching the movies with you, and if she isn’t a big horror fan, you basically let her choose. Since ghost/demon movies freak her out, I watch a lot of slasher movies with her haha. Her and I watched Child’s Play last week so I gave her the choice of Child’s Play 2, Halloween III, or Joy Ride, and she chose this.

Set two years after the original, Chucky was burnt and shot through the heart, because he gave love a bad name I guess. Chucky is rebuilt buy the toy company to prove that nothing was wrong with the doll at all. I’m not sure the police would allow that to happen, but I digress. The company has been going down hill since Chucky tried to kill Andy Barclay. One of the guys working on Chucky is killed by electrocution. The CEO of the company orders Mattison his assistant to cover the accident and get rid of the doll.

Andy is now in foster care and Mrs. Barclay is in a psych ward, see what is it with the 80s and even early 90s and psych wards?! Phil and Joanne Simpson adopt Andy, until his mother recovers. We all know Mrs. Barclay isn’t crazy, but people can’t believe that a doll killed people, even though two cops witnessed it, whatever. Meanwhile, Mattison throws Chucky in his car and drives off, stopping at a store to buy Vodka. Chucky grabs the car phone and calls the foster center asking for Andy and his new address, which the dumb bitch gives him; oh the early 90s how gullible were you? When Mattison attempts to buy the vodka with his gold card the clerk says he only accepts cash, Mattison states he doesn’t carry cash. Ok freeze here, I found it weird that its 1990, and the guy doesn’t have cash. It makes sense now, no one carries cash except old people, but in 1990 you carried cash! Mattison gets back in the car and Chucky orders him to drive to the Simpson’s house at gunpoint. Chucky quickly kills him with a bag over the head. Chucky enters the house and activates Tommy the good guy doll, and destroys Tommy with a porcelain statue of Marge’s, oops I mean Joanne Simpson’s statue. Chucky continues to bury the toy in the garden and takes its place as Tommy. Phil grounds the kids, Andy and Kyle thinking that one of them broke the statue. Andy spends the rest of the day with his foster sister Kyle, what a cool name for a girl. Chucky waits for nightfall and ties Andy up trying to possess him. Kyle comes in through the window, and unties Andy. Phil comes in, grabs Chucky and throws him in the basement.

The next day Andy goes the school, of course his foster family thinks he’s coo coo for cocoa puffs about Chucky. Chucky writes “FUCK YOU BITCH” on Andy’s paper, causing him to be held after by the teacher. Andy realizes Chucky is in the closet so he escapes out the window and runs home. Chucky attacks and kills the teacher with a bike pump and a yardstick. Yeah a wooden flimsy yardstick, but since this movie has you believe a doll can kill people then its ok. Phil and Joanne think Andy is crazy again after he tells them that Chucky followed him to school. Phil orders Andy to look in the basement, and he sees Chucky lying on the floor.

Later that night Andy grabs an electric knife and heads to the basement to kill Chucky, but Chucky attacks him. Phil comes down after hearing all the noise and slowly walks down the stairs. Chucky grabs a hook and trips Phil, causing him to fall over the railing and break his neck. That was pretty awesome; you don’t broken necks in movies that often unless it’s Schwarzenegger doing it with his bare Austrian hands. Joanne hears the racket and runs down to find Phil dead, she of course is convinced that Andy did it. Andy gets sent back to the foster center that night. Kyle discovers the Tommy doll buried in the garden and realizes that Andy was telling the truth. She goes inside looking for Chucky, only to find Joanne has been murdered. Chucky then attacks Kyle and orders her to take him to the foster center. At the center a fire alarm goes off, and Chucky kills Grace the manager by stabbing her and orders Andy to take him to the toy factory so he can possess him. I have no clue why Chucky had to go the factory but whatever.

Kyle tails them to the factory and Chucky knocks out Andy again. This kid is insanely easy to knock out. Chucky fails to possess him, since he has spent too much time in the doll body. Chucky then flips his shit and tries to kill Andy and Kyle instead. They run through a huge maze of good guy dolls, and out into the assembly line. Chucky follows them into the warehouse with a knife. They get through a shoot and trap Chucky’s hand under a gate. The next scene shows Chucky ripping his hand off in an awesome gory fashion. Kyle and Andy make their way to an exit, while Chucky shoves the knife into his stump and tapes it on. Chucky kills a security guard with the eye placement machine. Chucky comes down the assembly line on the belt and tries to kill Andy. One of the machines sews Chucky to the platform he’s on and Andy reverses the machine causing Chucky to go into a compartment where limbs are assembled to the dolls. Chucky screams like crazy and is brought back down the line with like 5 extra limbs. They sigh in relief and walk off, but the camera shows a blood trail under the machine. Suddenly the guard’s body swings over on a line and knocks Kyle unconscious. Chucky wheels over on a small cart missing his legs, and tells Andy he’s going to cut his legs off too. Andy opens a valve that causes boiling hot plastic to rush over Chucky, melting him down to a slop pile. He wakes Kyle up and they check out the heap that was Chucky. Of course Chucky springs back to life trying to kill them again, when Kyle shoves an air hose into his mouth causing him to inflate like a balloon and explode in blood and chunks. Kyle and Andy walk out of the factory and survive the doll’s attacks.

Though not as good as the original, Child’s Play 2 still has some tense scenes such as the final chase in the factory. It was nice to see Alex Vincent return to play Andy Barclay again. I don’t like the fact that no one believes Mrs. Barclay and they think she’s nuts, so she’s sent to a psychiatric hospital. My guess is that the actress wouldn’t do the sequel so they had to write her off, and that’s always lazy and annoying. Did Child’s Play need a sequel? No. Was this awful? Hardly, it could’ve been much worse. The special effects again were great, the doll does look realistic when it moves and talks. I love how manic Brad Dourif is in these movies; he’s a complete psycho. Kyle is good character in that she’s cool and obviously cares about Andy. She is supposed to be a troubled teen but doesn’t really come off that way; in fact she’s nicer than most real siblings to the little boy. Now did this movie need a sequel? No. Did we get one anyway? Yes of course! There are now 4 more in the series. All in all I would give Child’s Play 2 a B, it is not bad, but not great. The original has a warm place in my heart that the sequel doesn’t have. If you loved the first movie, then watch this. It has good scares and more Chucky craziness that we all love. Also something I noticed is the poster, it is awesome, but the jack in the box is not in the movie, nor does Chucky use sheers on anyone AND why is Chucky’s hair super long?  Was he trying out to be in Poison?  Because, he looks like CC Deville.  One thing I learned in this movie is that yard sticks are basically katana swords and you can easily end someone’s life with one!
