Bride of Chucky (1998)
Directed by Ronny Yu
Happy Halloween! This was the first year where I didn’t really have a plan for what October 31st’s review would be but whatever it is a fun one! I love Chucky, he and I have a long history. Child’s Play was the first horror movie I watched as a kid, too young, thanks dad. Of course I had nightmares for years after, again…thanks dad.
Bride of Chucky is the 4th movie in the series, Chucky gets revived by a woman named Tiffany, who I believe was a former girlfriend Charles Lee Ray. Stitched together and looking like shit, Chucky is back to kill more morons! This time though, he kills Tiffany and puts her body into a doll, so there it is…the BRIDE of Chucky. This installment has a much more comedic tone from the previous films and it works. I mean when you have a movie with a killer doll, it lends itself to comedy easily. The kills were fun, as kills can be.
The special effects are fairly good. Chucky and Tiffany are pretty good animatronics and are fairly believeable. Jennifer Tilly’s voice as Tiffany is perfect for the character and a good contrast to Brad Dourif’s gruff voice. The voice acting is great, Dourif is always amazing, his voice is so menacing. The acting of the rest of the cast is fairly solid. Jennifer Tilly is really good early on in her full human form, and man is she hot in this. I remember thinking that the first time I watched this in the early 2000s haha. Katherine Heigl stars as Jade before she was a loony bitch that Hollywood blackballed, and Nick Stabile plays Jesse. We get some other good actors thrown in, in smaller roles. The amazing John Ritter is Jade’s father, he’s greatly missed, that man was golden. Kathy Najimy (of Hocus Pocus fame) plays a small role as a motel maid, her physical comedy and goofiness is always fun. Last thing, the soundtrack is a mix of late 90s hard rock and metal, which seems to fit the movie fairly well.
Bride of Chucky is a really fun movie and what a great idea to add comedy to this franchise, it really needed some refreshing. Too bad it was followed up with Seed of Chucky, cuz that movie blows. Bride of Chucky gets a B+ from me.
