Fall (2022)
Directed by Scott Mann
I have a fear of heights. I can’t be up on a tall ladder without feeling uncomfortable. This being said, when the trailer for Fall dropped, I was like “hell no!” So why in the hell did I watch this?! Eh, idk, why do we like being scared? I’m an idiot.
Fall is about two women that climb a 2,000 ft radio tower. After they get to the top, the ladder breaks off and they’re stranded without a way to communicate with anyone, in the middle of the desert. Think 47 Meters Down but actually 47 meters up haha. Basically they’re stranded and fucked, let’s face it. One girl is dealing with the memory of her husband falling on a mountain climbing trip and dying. The other girl is trying to get her to face her fears.
The acting is pretty solid. Grace Caroline Currey does a great job as Becky, the main character. Virginia Gardner was good as her friend Hunter. Really they’re the only characters aside from flashbacks with Becky’s husband and a short scene with her dad. This has a similar feel to The Shallows, which I also enjoyed. The women do anything they can to find a way down. The twist at the end I didn’t expect but didn’t shock me. Basically Becky is alive, Hunter died tryint to retrieve the backpack from a satellite on the tower. Becky then uses Hunter’s corpse to pad her phone so she can send a text for help. Pretty sure if Hunter’s body fell 2,000ft to the ground it would explode and the phone would be destroyed, unless it was a Nokia brick. So you have to throw out any idea of realism. The movie relies heavily on the location of being stuck up super high. Which is solid because it is very unnerving. The special effects are rather lacking, but this isn’t the kind of movie that has many of them. The CGI for the tower was impressive though, I will say that. I had a very real feel of fear in this.
This movie just came out not too long ago, I believe it is streaming so if you are interested check it out. Not sure how many times I will watch this, but I enjoyed it after being woken at 3am by my 2 year old, so there’s that lol. I give Fall a B. Entertaining movie, not realistic but the acting brought it up a notch. Worth a watch.
