Videodrome (1983)
Directed by David Cronenberg
Body horror is a subgenre that I have never really dipped my toes into much, so I figured I’d jump right in and go to the master, David Cronenberg. His unique style is on full display in this movie. What did I think of it?
Videodrome is about a TV station programmer that specializes in adult entertainment, searching for a bizarre broadcast that is brutal and kinky. It is a really interesting plot, to say the least. Basically Videodrome is this messed up broadcast involving torture and S&M. Everyone seems to be pretty depraved in this movie because they totally get off on this stuff haha.
The acting is pretty solid. James Woods does a great job as the main character and it took me a while to realize Debbie Harry from Blondie was in this. Both of them do a great job of handling such odd material. The special effects are pretty intense and it was funny seeing a betamax tape cause so much havoc haha. The story was a little confusing, or at least for me, because I’m an idiot. I had a hard time figuring out what was going on at some points. I know Cronenberg can be a little trippy at times and this film is no exception.
In conclusion this was a pretty well made movie, it may have been confusing for me but I did enjoy it for the most part. The special effects and overall creepy factor boosted it for me. I give Videodrome a solid B.
