Slaughterhouse Rock (1987)
Directed by Dimitri Logothetis
When you’ve seen as many slasher movies as I have, you run out of good ones to watch and you grasp at straws trying to find anything of merit. Once you’ve got past the classics, the unsung heroes and the hidden gems you find stuff like Terror at Tenkiller and Slaughterhouse Rock. Is this a musical? Is this a music video? What is it?
Slaughterhouse Rock is about this dude, can’t remember his name and it really doesn’t matter, he starts having a weird connection with a supernatural force coming from Alcatraz…for reasons. Anyway after a lot of Elm Street-esque visions, he and his friends go there, and shit hits the fan. By shit hits the fan I mean he wigs out and starts killing his friends. Oh and the whole time Toni Basil is helping them battle him. Yes Toni Basil! Yes the Toni Basil that saying the awful 80s earworm called Mickey.
The special effects, I guess were ok. They were nothing incredible but nothing bad enough to make me laugh. A few of the sequences were kind of rough but this movie is from 1987. Where does the “Rock” part fit in of this movie? Alcatraz! Aka…The Rock. KMN. I avoided this movie for years because I thought it was a musical slasher movie. When in reality I should’ve avoided it because it is garbage! What is this movie? I don’t think the movie itself is quite sure, honestly. The only way I can explain it: A Nightmare On Elm Street mixed with The Beast Within, with a dash of Doom Asylum and a pinch of Toni Basil. Sound good? No? Well I can tell you it isn’t better than that.
I watched this on laserdisc, of all things. It came in a lot with two much better movies: Zombi 2 & The Funhouse. Anyhoo, I had a hard time with this one. The movie is so disjointed and the tone is all over the place. Is this horror? Is this comedy? Is this good? No, basically on all parts. It comes as no surprise that I give Slaughterhouse Rock a D-, only misses the F because worst slashers exist.
