Night of the Demons (1988)
Directed by Kevin Tenney
Comedy Horror usually doesn’t hit with me, I struggle a lot of times with that balance and usually it is too goofy or just not funny. Night of the Demons is one of those that I do enjoy. Is it goofy? Yes, but it has a certain charm to it that I can’t put my finger on.
Night of the Demons is about a group of friends that party on Halloween Night at an abandoned funeral parlor. The characters are stereotypes. We got the fat dude that just chugs beer, the asshole guy that is a dick to everyone, the good guy, the good girl, and the flirty girl. The characters might not be unique but they’re handled well. Linnea Quigley is in it, so you know you’re going to see some boobs right? The special effects are pretty fun, the scene where Quigley’s character pushes a lipstick into her nipple is very well done and unnerving. The demon makeup is creepy and a fun take.
The acting might be hammy but what do you expect for a lower budget horror comedy from the 80s? There is a fair amount of tension throughout the movie. The group struggles to escape the building and the demons chase them and at times it is pretty suspenseful. The soundtrack is solid late 80s stuff, nothing incredible, nothing bad.
If you haven’t seen this movie and you enjoy horror comedies, or hell if you enjoy Linnea Quigley movies, check it out, it is better than many of the genre. I haven’t seen the sequels and I really should change that. I give Night of the Demons a B+.
