Guinea Pig: The Devil’s Experiment (1985)
Directed by Saturo Ogura
Let’s add this to the “What the fuck did I just watch” list. Found footage and torture movies have cross paths many times, the Pougkeepsie tapes is one that handled it rather well, and had an unnerving feel. Guinea Pig could be considered one of the first, I suppose, well I’m not researching this shit haha.
The plot? There isn’t one! It’s just “home video” of a group of dudes torturing and beating a woman for 45 minutes or so. It is meant to be found footage but multiple camera angles are used and there are some editing cuts and even slow motion, haha. Like c’mon, we are supposed to believe this is real? Maybe in 1985! During the torture she’s beaten, kicked, spun around in circles, pinched with pliers, forced to listen to super loud white noise, had her finger nail ripped off, burnt with oil, covered in maggots, had organs thrown at her, her hand cut and smashed with a sledgehammer. Yeah the organ meat one I don’t quite get but she screams more than getting beaten. This all leads up to the scene where they insert a needle into her temple and it comes out of her eye.
The special effects are decent for the time, nothing too insane I guess, or at least not crazy showy. The eyeball scene was probably the most gruesome and realistic. I’m not quite sure why this was ever made. What was the point? To show off special effects? To make people think this is a snuff film? I guess. I just wonder why. Who wants to see this shit. Me I guess, because I watched it. There is an entire series of these movies. The Japanese are weird, man.
It is hard to talk about this movie because it is just a bunch of scenes mixed together. There’s no plot, no real dialogue and barely a narrative path. I watched it, I can say that, is it disturbing? Yeah, it is. Is it the most disgusting movie I’ve ever seen? No, that goes to a Serbian Film. The eyeball scene is pretty gnarly, Lucio Fulci would love it. I give this an F, but it really isn’t much of a movie, it wasn’t supposed to be.
