Street Trash (1987)

Directed by James M Muro

The 80s was home to so many great horror movies that counting them would likely be impossible.  At the same time, it was also home to some of the weirdest trash you’ve ever seen.  Street Trash is one of those.  How crazy is this movie?  Well it’s a little short of Basket Case but not far off, lets do it.

Street Trash is about a liquor store owner that sells alcoholic beverages to homeless people, unaware that the bottles will cause them to die in a super colorful and disgusting fashion.  It centers around two homeless brothers living in a junkyard trying to survive.  I have to mention that this movie is a horror comedy, and that kind of comedy that is borderline Troma at times.  So if you check it out, you’ll know what I’m talking about haha.

The special effects in this movie are INSANE.  Super over the top gore and crazy neon color blood(?) coming out of the affected hobos is crazy.  Hell the end kill is one of the most gruesome things I’ve seen in a movie, its hyper realistic at times, and other times its gloopy sloppy messes.  If you’re into gore and practical effects then this is a treasure trove.

Usually with movies like this the acting is bad, and Street Trash really isn’t any different.  Wooden at times, other times overacted but it has that sense of charm that 80s B horror had, and for that I appreciate it.  The dialogue isn’t anything special and the camera work is decent.  The main bad guy is pretty solid, being completely insane and having PTSD from Vietnam.  He is actually quite creepy and effective.

Would I suggest this movie to everyone?  Hell no.  Would I recommend this to horror fans?  Yes I would, it is competent and fun at times.  The crazy over the top gore is a treat to watch.  All this being said, it still is a flawed and bizarre movie, not one I would go back and watch too often, but the gore and absurdness of this boosts my score to a C+.
