Ranking the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Films
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is one of the most notorious horror movie franchises ever. From the first film it made a great impact in the genre and the sequels tried to capitalize on it, some were hits, some were misses. I have to mention that I have not seen “Leatherface” from 2017 so I won’t include it to the list. Here we go:
7. Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013)
My lord this movie. I disliked most things about it, aside from Alexandra Daddario. Just not good, can’t really say too much. The acting was bad, the writing was bad and that ending? WOOF!
6. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1995)
Many would consider this the worst, but the acting is so bad that it’s hilarious. Matthew McConaughey is so over the top in this movie that you can’t help but laugh. While it is bad, it’ll forever hold a place in my heart, since I saw it by accident at a younger age.
5. Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)
Probably my first disappointment in the film series. I really expected something from this, not sure why. I wanted some of the original scares and was excited to here it took on a more serious tone than the comical part 2. Just underwhelming, that’s all I can say.
4. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)
Yes! Yes! Feed me your anger. If you have read my blog in the past, you know my distain for this movie. I was not a fan. I can see why many people enjoy it, but it just doesn’t hit for me. I can’t stand the comedic tone to this and the humor just isn’t my style. I can say that it is a decent movie, at least aesthetically which is more than you can say for a few of the others.
3. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006):
A lot of people hate this movie and I’m not quite sure why. Is it great? No. Is it horrible? Hardly. The acting is fairly decent, especially R. Lee Ermey hamming it up again as the sheriff. Jordana Brewster is solid enough, and pretty enough that you like her. The relationship with the brothers is believable and the special effects are gruesome, so it deserves a little more credit.
2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
The remake really was a good adaptation. They were able to take some of the original suspense and replicate it. This remake has some beautiful and creative shots, thinking about the camera going through the hole in the hitch hiker’s head makes me smile. Jessica Beal does a great job as the final girl and she’s always charming. Leatherface is brutal and the kills are intense at times. R Lee Ermey is great as the sheriff.
1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
The original is and always will be the best. It was extremely low budget and that only adds to the creepiness. The movie relies more on suspense and implied gore than it does gruesome special effects. It isn’t as bloody as many may say or remember. It is beautifully shot and competently acted. If you have never seen it, it is a must view.
