Presence (2024)

Directed by Steven Soderbergh

Ah yes paranormal horror, that genre that has stuck around forever.  All of them are basically the same, they can be pretty creepy but they tend to follow the same tropes.  All of them, except this one?

Presence is about a family that moves into a new home and strange things start happening, especially to the daughter.  This time the movie is from the point of view of the spirit itself.  A very interesting concept that was handled decently in this movie.  My biggest issue is, that it is kind of boring.  Like if there wasn’t any sexual stuff in it, you could make this PG13.  I was hoping for more terror in this and maybe some blood, but nah, not here.

The acting is ok.  I was less impressed with Lucy Liu than I was with Chris Sullivan aka the fat guy from This is Us, he was pretty solid.  The brother Tyler was kind of meh and the sister Chloe, I was expecting more from that character.  She’s rebellious and dealing with the death of her friend, but they don’t take it in an interesting way other than implying the presence is her dead friend.

Idk, I don’t have a whole heck of a lot to say about this movie, it was rather “mid” as the kids say these days.  Maybe if you enjoy paranormal movies and want something interesting, check this out.  I wasn’t super impressed with this, it was an interesting take and I appreciate the originality but it is just kind of dull all around.  I give this a C.
