Companion (2025)

Directed by Drew Hancock

Very seldom does a horror movie come out with a relatively original premise.  Typically its remakes and ripoffs.  Companion bears some resemblance to movies like M3GAN, but has its own twist to it.

Companion is about a guy named Josh and his girlfriend Iris.  They drive to the middle of nowhere to stay in a vacation cabin with some friends.  We soon find out Iris is some high tech robot that basically becomes a girlfriend and fuck buddy.  Shit hits the fan when Iris kills the older Russian boyfriend of Josh’s friend Kat, in self defense.  Sergei tried to force himself on Iris, and she stabbed him.  We later find out that Josh “jailbroke his fuck doll” so she would know how to defend herself and act more aggressively so she would kill Sergei and they could take his millions of dollars.  This of course backfires and now Iris is able to ignore Josh’s commands after taking his phone.  Everyone has to band together to hunt her down and stop her, buuuut we find out Josh is really the villain in an interesting twist.

The acting is quite solid.  Sophie Thatcher plays Iris and has a great performance.  She feels robotic but human at the same time and makes you love her, dislike her, and root for her multiple times in the movie.  Jack Quaid as Josh just has a punchable face and fits the role quite well.  The comedy is also quite decent.  They have some recurring segments, such as the meet cute between the male robot Patrick and his gay lover Eli.  There are some funny lines throughout the movie, such as the jailbreaking your sex doll quip that made me laugh out loud.

There isn’t much to say about the special effects, but it is mostly CGI, which is always kind of a bummer.  This movie isn’t a film that really has to rely on gore effects so I gave it a pass.  The kills are ok, mostly just gun shots, stabbings and bludgeonings.

I really enjoyed this.  It had a good balance of thrills and laughs.  The twists weren’t really too crazy, I kind of saw them coming but I did still enjoy them when they developed.  The acting is strong and the story is somewhat unique.  I would suggest this if you’re looking for something different.  I give Companion a B.
