The Slumber Party Massacre (1982)
Directed by Amy Holden Jones
Ah the 80s slasher, my bread and butter. What is even better, is that I recently saw this movie on The Last Drive In with Joe Bob Briggs, durings his Nightmareathon. I have seen this movie a few times, then realized I have never reviewed it, even though I reviewed the remake and part 2. So, yeah….review time.
The Slumber Party Massacre is about a killer, wearing a Canadian Tuxedo, toting around a big drill, and killing people. That is basically it. There’s a group of girls that he is after, for whatever reason. It all comes to a head when the girls have a slumber party, imagine that right? The killer starts laying waste to everyone around, even the pizza delivery guy.

This movie has a fair amount of dark humor in it. The most notable scene is where the pizza guy collapses when they open the door, everyone screams and the one girl starts eating the pizza, because she’s hungry. The kills are decent, its all drillings for the most part so nothing too crazy. The killer is my biggest beef. He looks like an every day carpenter, wearing jeans, a red shirt and a denim jacket. I don’t find him menacing at all. The girls are alright as well, no one all that great, but they all put in decent performances.

People tend to put this one towards the top of the list of best 80s slashers. While it is good, I have a hard time taking the killer seriously and some of the humor is meh to me. The girls are all fairly cute, and Jackie the token black girl is pretty hot, but no one wows me with their performance. The kills are all fairly the same as well. I give The Slumber Party Massacre a B-. I do enjoy the crazy second one much more, because it is so wacky and fun.
