Oct. 15th: 5 Movies Everyone Loves and I don’t Understand Why

5 Horror Films Everyone Loves, and I Don’t Understand WhyThe horror movie community is very cult driven. Most of the famous horror movies have a legion of diehard fans, ie: Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th. Different people have different views and not everyone is going to agree with the majority. I tend to find myself veering from the pack in a variety of different areas. I don’t purposely do it, it is just how I function. I love horror and while I am not a fan of everything I do appreciate different views so, the following movies aren’t movies that I particularly hate, but more or less don’t understand the love for.

-The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Ok, it isn’t your typical horror movie, or maybe not even a horror movie but it is well entrenched in the Halloween spirit. People LOVE this movie, like you see Jack Skellington EVERYWHERE in October. I think its quirky and odd, but I don’t really care for it. I do not like musicals or movies that have too much singing. In most cases I find singing in movies kind of pointless, can’t they just talk the dialogue?

-The Evil Dead (1981)

Is to me is one of the rare moments when a sequel is better than the original. People like to say the first one is a comedy/horror. Really it isn’t. It is a horror movie, plain and simple but the goofy acting and over the top situations weren’t taken serious, so it has an inadvertent comedic effect, much like Miami Connection or Deadly Prey. I love Evil Dead 2, and I like Bruce Campbell, but this movie annoys me. I have watched it a handful of times trying to get the love for it that so many have, but I just can’t get into it. The fact that it has a 7.5/10 on IMDB shocks me to be honest.

-The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)

I reviewed this movie last year and slammed it, which was met with revolt from my neighbor lol. In retrospective now, it isn’t really as bad as I originally said but I still don’t understand the overwhelming love for it. It is goofy and a complete 180 from the original film that I like a lot. The acting reaches Troma levels at moments and I can’t handle that style, it irritates me.

-Prom Night (1980)

Maybe not as loved as the others on this list, but Prom Night is always mentioned in the best 80s slasher movies. I honestly don’t see the love for this movie, its slow, kind of dull and rather uneventful in my opinion. I have seen this a few times and I actually found part 2 and 4 more entertaining. While the sequels don’t live up to the quality of acting or tone of the first, they’re faster paced and more interesting to me.

-Scream (1996)

I appreciate Scream for everything it did for the slasher genre that I love. It brought it back from the ruins of bad direct to VHS schlock it became in the early 90s. Even back at the time I enjoyed I Know What You Did Last Summer more, now I can see Scream is the better movie, but I still can’t fully get into it. It was a fresh idea at the time and it spawned several sequels and made an icon out of Ghostface. I don’t love it, I don’t hate it, it just exists to me.
