Curse of Chucky (2013) Directed by Don Mancini

Yes, another Chucky movie. I figured I suffered through Seed of Chucky before, then I can watch this movie. It is on Netflix right now, so I watched it. I was too lazy to get up off the couch and put in a dvd so Netflix seemed like the logical choice. Amongst all the terrible straight to dvd low budget crap on there I found this, I heard it was bad but whatever I’m a sucker for a Chucky movie.

Set twenty-five years after the original and some time after the dumpster fire that was seed of Chucky. The ugly ass old doll shows up at the home of an older woman and her paralyzed daughter named Nica. Nica then throws the doll away after not knowing where it came from. She finds later that her mother has been murdered with a stab wound, but it is written off as a suicide. Of course we know it was Chucky but like all the Chucky movies we have to wait for the idiots to realize the doll is alive.

Soon after Nica’s older Sister Barb visits with husband Ian, their daughter and their hot live in nanny Jill. Father Frank, a priest is also along with the group for the visit. Alice finds Chucky and they become friends, smart…I know. That night Chucky pours rat poison into a bowl of chili, Father Frank ends up eating it, and leaves. Later he is found dead in his car, from an accident. This is a gory scene where his head gets lopped off. The special effect is pretty decently done and I found it rather cool. After everyone goes to sleep, Nica reads up on the doll on the internet, and finds articles of the unsolved Chucky murders and the dolls like to Charles Lee Ray. Chucky electrocutes the hot nanny while she is skyping with Barb, as they are lesbian lovers or something, kind of odd whatever. He kills her by kicking a bucket of water over and it spills on to an electrical outlet. Barb goes to check on Alice, and is attacked by Chucky with a knife. Nica hears Barb screaming and crawls upstairs because the elevator doesn’t work due to a power outage. By the time she gets up the stairs Barb is dead and her eye bounces down the stairs towards Nica. Nica then sees for herself that Chucky is in fact alive. Chucky bolts off and Nica wakes up Ian. He takes Nica into the garage and goes to find Alice.

While Ian is looking for Alice, Chucky gets into the car and revs the motor, trying asphyxiate Nica. This is horribly lame, c’mon Chucky, you can do better than that! Ian returns and disarms Nica, believing that she killed the people. Nica tells him Chucky is alive but the doll acts lifeless when Ian looks at him. Ian decides to look at the footage on the hidden camera he hid in Chucky earlier. Trying to prove that Barb was banging Jill, so he could get custody of Alice. He sees that Chucky is indeed alive, but before he can react, Chucky comes into the room and cuts Ian’s jaw off with a hatchet. Nica breaks free and tries to kill Chucky, but fails and Chucky pushes her off the balcony to the first floor.

Nica asks Chucky why he’s killing them, he explains in flashbacks that he was a family friend and fell in love with Nica’s mother when she was preggo with Nica. When Chucky kidnapped the mother and wanted to start a family with her. The mother betrayed Chucky by calling the police, he then stabs her in the stomach and flees. The stab is what caused Nica’s paralysis. Yeah I’m not sure that is possible but hey whatever a fucking doll is killing people so I suspend by beliefs for a bit. It shows Chucky’s flight form the police from the first movie and he mentions Andy Barclay. He says that he came back and it took him 25 years to kill Nica’s mother, but he finally got to do it. Chucky tries to kill Nica but she buries a knife into his back seemingly killing him. A cop arrives and he only sees Barb’s body upstairs and Nica holding the bloody knife. Chucky watches, unmoving from a nearby chair.

Nica is found guilty of the murders and put into a mental asylum. Again with the nut houses?! C’mon, why are their so many of these damn things?! Chucky gets retained by the police as an exhibit for the trials, and afterward the corrupt arresting officer takes Chucky away to be delivered to someone. The officer get in the car and sees Chucky breathing, before he can check it out he is killed by Tiffany, who was hiding in the backseat the whole time with her jugs hanging out, because its Jennifer Tilly.   Alice is now living with her grandma and she comes home from school to find Chucky waiting. Chucky persuades Alice to play “hide the soul”, starting a chant to transfer his soul into her body. The grandmother, who had been tied up and strangled with a bag over her head, wasn’t dead and sits up when the chant starts. The post credit scene set six months later, Chucky is delivered to Andy Barlcay, still played by Alex Vincent. When Andy returns to answer his phone call from his mom, Chucky cuts his way out of the package. Andy, having anticipated Chucky coming after him again, holds a shotgun to Chucky’s head and says “play with this” before pulling the trigger.

Wow, that’s all I can say about this movie. It starts off promising, the acting wasn’t as awful as I expected. The movie as a whole was rather bad though, I found myself saying “oh my god” and “oh come on, really?” quite a bit. The animatronics on Chucky weren’t the best, he walked really robotically, not as fluently as the original movies. I like the more serious tone of this, it was a nice change from the dumb humor of Bride and Seed. I had a hard time believing this was only an hour and a half movie, it felt much longer. The middle of the movie drags, and the kills were rather meh. There is nothing new in this movie that you haven’t seen in every other Chucky movie. A kid has the doll, the kid says the doll can talk and tell them things, the parents don’t believe them, the doll kills people, they think it is someone else doing it, and then they realize it’s the doll. This story is rather played out and I hope they don’t make another Chucky movie. I’d give this a D-, it is better than Seed of Chucky but its bad, believe me.
